Congratulations, Pennsylvanians!
We’re gonna start today off with a little good news, for once:
The number of registered Democrats in Pennsylvania has surged to over four million, thanks to a tight race for the party’s presidential nomination between senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
KYW, you are too kind. Because for real: It’s hard to imagine such a surge in registrations for Hillary. It’s just not that kind of party. So what are we talking about when we talk about this newer, other surge? If we were betting folks, we’d be betting that a lot of these new registrations are A) young people registering for the first time, inspired by the Obama campaign and B) people who had either fallen out of the political process sometime over the last 16-24 years, or people who are mad as hell and jumping ship from the GOP — both of whom are most likely desiring a new boss unlike the old boss. Any way you slice it, those are all welcome partygoers. To the Democratic Party: Alright, guys, this is your thing to mess up now.

C. Republicans who have full intention of voting for McCain and want a role in choosing easy opposition. Their own party race is run, and partisans want to do something.
D. “Rendellians”: Pennsylvanians who according to the state’s own governor will stop at nothing to make sure a black man loses by a substantial double digit margin.

E. Those people who stuck it to the man by registering as independents when they were in college and finally realized that in a two party state you gotta suck it up and pick sides.
