Film Threat: Fakin’ It
RECOMMENDED: Not to be confused with the Andre Gide book of the same name, The Counterfeiters is the true story of what is basically the largest counterfeit operation the world has ever seen: The Nazi’s mid-1940s operation which saw them basically fund the war with faked US and UK dough. At the center of the story is Salomon Sorowitsch, a boho ne’er-do-well who was more or less the greatest bill forger of his time… until he got caught, thrown in the hoosegow and then subsequently moved over to a concentration camp where the Nazis used his considerable talents to do their foul bidding. When it was all over, Sorowitsch’s shop cranked out 130 million pounds sterling which in those days, bought a lot of death. Already a huge festival fave abroad, The Counterfeiters finally sees a U.S. run; and if the Philebrity rule of filmmaking applies — that we’ll watch anything about stealing, lying, faking, or heists — this one hits a lot of the marks. ALSO NEW IN THEATRES: German director Michael Haneke remakes his own film Funny Games, a home-invasion thriller starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt and Paul Brady Corbet about two psychotic (but honestly, pretty hot) brothers who like to bludgeon yuppie families for fun and sport. (Also recommended, view trailer here.) Elsewhere, Horton Hears A Who, which quite honestly seems unbearable on every level imaginable; and Doomsday, some multiplex fare about biological warfare.
