Vince Fumo To Retire, All But Handing Senate Seat To Johnny Doc
This is like the end of one of those long, drawn-out latter-day Philip Roth novels, where the hero essentially fades away after 352 pages of one fucked up thing happening after another. But if what sources close to The Vince say is true, at the end of Fumo’s current term, he’s out like shout. And holy shit, it doesn’t take long, look what’s in the in-box:
The POST FUMO era has begun. See who takes his place and ask them questions
about policy, priorities and the future of the district:STATE SENATE CANDIDATE NIGHT
Wed. March 12th at 7:00PM
Featuring
Anne Dicker, John Dougherty, Larry Farnese & Jack Morley
Palumbo Rec Center
10th and Fitzwater Sts.
And that’s just from an “impartial” third party. (Hi, Vern.) We won’t even show you the gleeful one Anne Dicker just sent out. But here is the rub, folks, in case you can’t see the way this is going: Larry Farnese already might have botched himself right outta the running, if he makes it onto the ballot at all. Dicker is the Whole Foods gentrifier that most dyed-in-the-wool neighborhood folks (and former Fumo fans) wouldn’t even talk to, much less vote for. (We like her policies, but it is what it is.) And this is the first we’re hearing of this Jack Morley character. So unless he’s Superman or Dicker starts wearing pajama bottoms and Adidas sandals to start really connecting with the constituency, say hello to your new boss, the utterly dastardly and completely gross Johnny Doc. On the upshot, this does kinda save us all the grief we were gonna get from you guys when we endorsed Vince Fumo. Happy retirement, you old coot. We just wish it didn’t have to be this way.

Oh come on guys. Doc in no way has this locked. The first district is a large and wide, diverse district and doesn’t include only Fishtown & Port Richmond as your generalization makes it out to be. I seriously doubt an Irish union thug who supported Santorum is going to interest any of the residents of East Center City or the gentrifing neighborhoods which make up the vast bulk of this district.

i gotta agree with Patricio - this post is nuttin but fear-spin … Doc will not win, esp once the machine aligns with Farnese and all of Doc’s skeletons are revealed in the next month or so

Doc may not have it locked, but he’s got a much heavier grip on this than Dicker does. It seems Patricio’s speaking of that “New Philadelphia” that was supposed to sweep out the old blood of City Council and usher in Matt Reuben, as if he and Nutter were on some “revolution” ticket. That. Did. Not. Happen.
I saw on the NL Board some folks complaining about the South Philly accents grating through Doc’s ads. Thing is Dicker needs an ear for that accent, and the N. Philly accents too, not just the “educated” speak of the “New Philadelphia” “creative class.”
