Musical Rumblings: Lou Weed

fern>>> You may have already noticed that big honkin’ ad upstairs, but just in case you haven’t: LOU REED IS PLAYING AT THE ELECTRIC FACTORY! This show — on April 19 — is one of only six “club” dates he’s doing, and is just a month after he opens up the SXSW in Austin as keynote speaker tomorrow.
>>> Speaking of SXSW, are you in a Philly band that’s going? If so, give us a shout at tips[at]philebrity[dot]com. We’re looking for photos, diary entries and the like.
>>> These are strange days for the new weird scene, indeed, but it looks like Philly’s Fern Knight (pictured) might be the slow and steady ones to win the race to soft-psych nirvana. The band has its third, eponomously titled album out in May, produced my Esper Greg Weeks, and augmented by Sun Ra scholar James Wolf on the fiddle. We sneaked a track to leak y’all, and we’re impressed:

For anyone who might care: “Sundew” is a tiny, glassy insectivorous bog plant native to the NJ Pine Barrens.

I was glad Margie and Jim came along on one of our piney bog trips last summer; it’s always a pleasure to see the place through fresh, appreciative eyes. Leave it to the Fernies to turn a plant into a song. It’s sorcery, I tell you!
