Film Threat: Men, Girls And Dudes
RECOMMENDED: We appropriately gushed about City Of Men — the sort-of-but-not-really sequel to the towering Brazilan drug epic City Of God – earlier this week when we gave away tickets to a preview screening of it, but it really is so good that we’re going to do it again. The plot: Two dirt-poor Favela teens (hey, everybody’s dirt poor in the Favela, aren’t they?) grow up acting as fathers to one another. But when one reconnects with his actual father, who’s freshly out of jail, the friendship goes pear-shaped while, it just so happens, a major drug dealer war erupts on their side of the hill. Stylish and gripping, keep an eye on this one as being one of the better releases of 2008. At Ritz Five.
ALSO NEW IN THEATRES: Is it just us, or does The Other Boleyn Girl feel like a vanity project/costumey vacation for Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman — “OMG, you look GREAT in that!!!! — and the only one who’s doing work is you the viewer? And in Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell exhausts another in his ever-shrinking databases of sports he can find gross hairy-chest jokes in. But let’s not kid ourselves: We’re going to see this. Thrice.
