Garnet Mimms Is Still Awesome

garnet mimmsThere’s a great article by the Inky’s Nick Cristiano bouncing through the wires now about unsung soul/R&B pioneer and West Oak Lane gospel singer Garnet Mimms. At age 74, Mimms is about to release his first album in over 30 years — Is Anybody Out There?, due out late March on Conshohocken’s Evidence label — and it should restore some props to where they’re due. We discovered Mimms over the last few years on various rock and soul comps, and we’ve always wondered about him. He was best known for his biggest hit, “Cry Baby,” but the Mimms we have come to love is all about Northern Soul stompers that are, in a word, badass. Dig this burner:

    Good from Mr. Mimms!

Just love those wonderful old names like Garnet; it’s an Old English vestige that African Americans took with them when they moved to the North. Have a few of those names in my family, too.
