This Weekend: The Work

fpFRIDAY:
>>> Jesus, did anybody else just get KILLED by this week? Well, put on yer spats, because the winter blitzkreig of avoid-quiet-time-at-all- costs-for-fear-of-crippling-depression somehow, on the first weekend of February, just got even more banoodley. Hip-hop fans: Did you even know that Jeru The Damaja (he’s no amatcha) is playing at Tritone and that Blaqstarr is playing White Tees White Belts at the Arts Garage? Ridiculous.
>>> And hey all you acidrainbowpartyanthem types: Did YOU know that every party you call home is also going on tonight? Making Time with The Teenagers/Dark Horse & The Carousels is at Pure, that 4AM thing with Yo Majesty is at the Barbary (both duly noted in these pages in the last 24 hours), Faux Pas is at National Mechanics, and Sex Dwarf is back at Fluid with a Mute Records theme. In related news, Philly just ran completely out of cocaine and my Google alert just told me that my American Apparel stock just paid for my unborn son’s first 4 years at Friends Select. Hell no, I ain’t goin’ out tonight, I’m shopping for footie pajamas online and hooking up some Lapsanf Souchong. Look it up, then have fun without me. Countin’ my millions.
>>> Rockists, get used to it: A seismic shift has occured in the universe (let’s just call it THE LAST TWENTY YEARS) and from here on out, it’s looking like you cats are ALWAYS gonna be third item down in Friday’s weekend picks, until you shave the beards and come out to play with the rest of us. But we’re still lookin’ out for ya: The National Eye celebrate the release of their newest compact disc with The Swims and new Park The Van signee Pepi Ginsberg at the Johnny And Brenda’s. We are very much feeling the new Eye track “Pure Film” that’s on their MySpace page.
SATURDAY:
>>> The Spinto Band are back! For real! They’re playing with this shittastic band The Whigs who make the Black Crowes look like fucking Stereolab, so sleep, sleep, sleep on that, but make sure you’re in the building for when the Spintos take the stage — also at JB’s — and most likely preview some of their forthcoming album.
>>> Meg Baird, see below.
>>> And your dance party choices for the evening: Ten Commandments at the Barbary for that 60s soul/reggae interface; and Hurrah at Medusa, representing the genres of “Oh Hell Yes, Totally Insane House and Seductive Lust Rock.”
SUNDAY:
>>> Cue the part of the weekend where we all act like we give a flying fuck about the SuperBowl. Sorry, I do get the whole Giants thing, thank you Fich, but c’mon, in 2008, football is the George W. Bush of sports. But if you must “do” this bowl of super, point your GPS to The Lost Bar Of Atlantis for their big Chili Cookoff. At least there it will be so loud and drunk and TASTY that the football will be an afterthought anyway. And don’t get it twisted: You can watch all the commericals on YouTube now anyway.
>>> Better yet: Pay honor to the late, great Steve Keller, who passed from us over the holidays. At JB’s, Kyp Mallone (TV On The Radio), Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin), Feather Mills (Blood Feathers), Gerard Angelini (Gildon Works) and Scott Vittorelli (Asteroid #4) all salute the dude. And you should, too. Proceeds benefit Keller’s family.
>>> But on the off chance that someone has slipped you powerful psychedelics, DO go see Dan Deacon‘s technicolor hi-tech freakout at the First Unitarian Church, and when you peak, know this: This life, this freak flag, this corrosion? It’s WORK. But the rewards are self-evident. Be careful out there, people. This weather’s a real bitch.
