It’s been a blessed long while since we’ve given a passing thought to deposed supervillain Rick Santorum, who still pops his head up occasionally to vent in his divisive Inky column The Elephant In The Room, home to the most unintentionally funny graphics you’ll find in a major American newspaper (see left). What brings him begrudgingly back to our attention is an eavesdropped account of the guy openly scheming to “beat” John McCain via some LOUD on-the-train cell-phone jockeying. It almost seems too good to be true, but it’s just so classically Santorum — y’know, that trademark combination of tactlessness and arrogance — that we really can’t bring ourselves to doubt it.
