This Weekend: The Weekend Punk Broke

bbFRIDAY:
>>> I have dipped my finger in the honeypot of this weekend’s doings, and I am proud to proclaim to all within earschot: NOT BAD. NOT GREAT, PHILADELPHIA, BUT NOT BAD. And as befits the January tourfreeze, both of your leadoff Friday night scenes emphasize local talent, community-building and housebound afterparties fueled on whatever the barkeep saw fit to sell you at 1:52 while no one was looking. You’re among friends, friends, whether it’s at the super-strong local bill of The Cobbs/Jotto/Papertrigger/Greyhounds at the North Star, or the Pig Iron Theatre benefit at the Troc depicted in today’s Noontime Nugget. Says a source close to the event, “The show tonight is going to fucking rock. They’ve got Yanni from Stinking Liz on guitar… Think “War Pigs,” Styx, other shreadathons via the great Pig Iron bizzaro filter…” If it feels like drunk you in a Philly full of possibility circa 1998, you’re probably doing it right. We’re picking up where we left off.
>>> Further proof of late-90s timefreeze: DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist/Kid Koala at TLA. Related hemp-smelling news: Big stoner rock/progg-ish show at Johnny Brenda’s tonight.
>>> And for a FROZEN IN TIME TRIFECTA, there is a JUNGLE RAVE at Medusa. No shit, actual drum ‘n’ bass. In 2008! What the hell is going on here? Seriously: Let Me Ride and troniksessions.com presents Jungle Rave with J. Smooth, Andy Sine, Art Cuebik, Icon, Joey Breakdown, Jason Magin, and your host Illy MC. Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads…
SATURDAY:
>>> We’d like congratualte Bleached Black and, by proxy, awesome Philly expat disco disco DJ Ron Morelli (send us a mixtape, dude!) and Lovefingers at Medusa for achieving Flyer Of The Week status. Don’t stare too long, you’ll get grossed out.
>>> Give some to the local bands: Buzzworthy, herky-jerky, multi-gender indie kids An American Chinese on the grind at The Fire, and ex-everything but mostly ex-Goats dudes Black Landlord hit up JB’s.
>>> And more StonerFest 08® at the Khyber with the utterly bombastic and blistering Six Organs Of Admittance with Randall of Nazareth/The Intergalactic Incense Burners/Creeping Weeds. Dude.
SUNDAY:
>>> Maybe it’s the deep January thing again, but has anyone else been wanting to go out and get ripped on Sunday nights lately? Like, almost out of protest? No? Just me. OK, cool, I’ll get back to you once I’m on like Step Five. Meantime, The Perfect Prescription at Silk City with My Best Fiend will end it like you began it: Warm, shoegazey and holding your weight in beer.
>>> And not to be denied, what is probably the best show of the weekend, tucked away on a Sunday night in deep West Phila: Brother JT/Tyvek/Eat Forever at the Queen of Sheba. Steal away and be free. We’re moving this weekend, and we probably won’t show up for work on Monday anyhow. You did remember to Tivo The Wire, right?
