Philly Bike Share: Could It Happen?
A whole bunch of people seem to think so. Among them? Urban Sustainability Forums, the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, all of whom are sponsoring a public forum about the concept this Thursday at 6pm at the Academy. And while you can find loads of reasons why a public bike share program could be a great quality-of-life addition to the City, there’s not too many people espousing definitive how’s. Lucky then, that a Frenchman named Gilles Vesco will be on the panel on Thursday; Vesco oversees the Vélo’V system in Lyon, which is so simple, easy and cool that you’re going to automatically have fantasies of spending your days off biking from one bikeshare outpost to another. If Vesco and the gang can just figure out how to make these bikes unstealable and somehow stop asshole Philly drivers from actively gunning for bicyclists (we’re looking at you, ENTIRE DRIVING POPULACE), we’re as good as signed up.

hopefully this will show the driving populace that biking is a feasible alternative. then maybe critical mass riders will finally realize that they’re doing more harm than good.

If they charge for this, isn’t it just a lot more feasible to buy a cheap bike off Craig’s List? I also worry this would increase the already substantial number of helmetless cyclists hurtling through the dangerous, narrow, asshole infested streets of our fair city. An interesting idea though.
