hugoart Possibly trying to rival One Book, One Philadelphia’s hip choosing of a Dave Eggers book, the American Library Association picked Brian Selznick’s mammoth, black-and-white The Invention of Hugo Cabret as the year’s best “picture book” in the kid-lit department. Between this and the packed house at National Mechanics Saturday, does this mean hip librarians are here to stay? Maybe. The other awards went to equally offbeat books, and apparently there were “whoops and even screams” as the winners were announced. Which means, yes, this awards show was more raucous than the Golden Globes. Has the world gone topsy-turvy?
