Band To Watch: Ravens And Vultures
When we heard about a year or so ago that Andrew Ryan — of the adventurous Philly electronic outfit Vertebrae — was working on a new band with Chetana and Darshana Borah — the sisters behind the late, great Last Love world pop DJ nights at the Khyber — we didn’t know what to expect at all. We found out this week when we scored a download of Keep Your Kill, the first EP from Ravens And Vultures, the band in question. They’re a baby band, sure, with lots of growing to do, but what we’re hearing is really exciting: R&V cribs from a diverse well of influences from breakbeat to shoegaze to indie pop to raga and beyond. Take for instance, the EP’s title track: “Keep Your Kill” starts off like Cornershop or something on Ninja Tune, slides into a dirty Peter Hook style bassline and then abruptly changes tact, morphing into an Unrest groove — with a bold, nearly metal guitar lead over it that then slides into a disco cowbell moment. All without vocals, and all with a stylish, psych affect that is pretty signature. Dig:
Ravens And Vultures play a record release show this Saturday, January 12th at Johnny Brenda’s. Michael Johnson Ape School, Dragons Of Zynth and DJs Manny & Jason (of Bleached Black) round out the bill.

Got this this morning. Between this and the new Panda Riot record, Philly really has something to live for. Except that Panda Riot totally skipped town.
