This Weekend: This Soy Egg Nog White Russian Totally Tastes Like PUMPKIN PIE!
FRIDAY:
>>> How awesome is this? We haven’t even looked at our email in days, haven’t picked up an incoming call in twice as long, and have moved on from gossiping about bands and media entirely to a new thing where our primary concern is making shots that taste like pumpkin pie. It’s a good life, these holidays, and before it all comes crashing down and you enter MAJOR ANNUAL JANUARY CRIPPLING DEPRESSION, there are good times to be had. If, like us, you vaguely remember the ’90s as a poorly dressed, sexless epoch of sludge rock that nevertheless had its heart (mostly) in the right place, lace up those old Chuck Taylors and belly up to the bar at Johnny Brenda’s tonight for a lineup straight outta the Khyber circa 1993: Caterpillar, the Philly-by-way of Delaware band that kinda defined everything pure and beautiful and weeeeeeeeded about that era, and The Photon Band, who have pretty much fucking ruled since their first gig and only stopped once in a while to pop out a doctorate or whathaveyou. Andrew Chalfen’s The Trolleyvox opens, thereby completing the circle of life.
>>> Elsewhere in the land of local legendry: Brother JT — will his psychic vibrations be felt down the block during the Photon Band’s set? — stops in for a howsyourfather at The M Room, while at Tritone, the Gold Soundz night returns with an impressive double bill: A Sunny Day In Glasgow and NYC’s The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, whose shimmery vibes we highly recommend.
>>> But in Partyland® tonight, your options are somewhat limited what with most DJs in town trying not to blow their respective NYE wads. That’s right, I just said “wads.” Don’t look at me like that. Shit, I’m on vacation, y’all are lucky I, Weekend Picks Fairy, showed up at all. However, there is in fact a big Philadelphyinz blowout at Arts Garage, 1535 Ridge, with more special guests than I can special count. Lock it down here for the bass, but if you are in a Members Only mood, Madonna Michael Prince is back at the Barbary.
SATURDAY:
>>> Holy hell, there is NOTHING except for this:

SUNDAY:
>>> Undeniable fact: we’ve had more fun the last few years on December 30th than New Year’s Eve without a second thought. Bear with me here, because you know the old tropes: NYE is Amateur Night, there’s too much pressure, everything is stupidly expensive and wickedly dumb, and so on. So before you consider what follows, also consider this: Get absolutely plowed on New Year’s Eve Eve with friends at home — since there is fuck-all going on anyway — and then sleep the sleep of the just until 5pm the next day, fry up a steak and then watch Tila Tequila’s NYE I’m-Still-Bisexual Countdown.
NEW YEAR’S EVE:
>>> OR, don’t. But seriously, unless I know I’m in a small room with friends-’til-the-end — PS, close buds, I know of such a room this NYE, get at me for details — the whole NYE thing gives me the heebie jeebies. But that’s not you. And this is about you. So of course, of course, there is the Making Time NYE Freakout at Transit, $40 all-u-can-dranq bar, and how in the hell did we get through the week without talking about this flyer? Oh, I know how: WE SAT ON OUR ASSES AND WATCHED DISCOVERY CHANNEL ALL WEEK! That was awesome.
>>> Also of note: Datarock/Low B/DJ Deejay/Juiceboxxx at the Electric Factory, DJ Dozia/Rich Medina at Silk City, and — this one sounds the funnest, actually — Make Yr Break with DJ Bunnystyle/Sgt Sass/Benni E/snapCrotch at the Bubble House for your very special Powergays NYE. There’s a lot more going on — check listings — but we’d like to remind you all to be careful out there, and have a great one! We’ll be back with some year-end stuff on Monday, and then it’s back at it on Jan. 2. Should old acquaintance be forgot? Prolly.
