Dept. Of Ouch: New Doc Shows Philadelphians Embracing Murder City Status

What follows is not for the weak of heart, or really anyone who believes in the natural goodness of the human spirit or any of that kind of shit. The trailer for Unfadeable Images’ HOMICIDE CITY: Money Murder & Politics has been making the rounds for about two days now, and frankly, it’s stopped us in our tracks. A man-on-the-street style doc, presumably, the trailer samples quotes and quips from its subjects on the state of Murderdelphia. While some of the sentiments are certainly not new — poverty and easy access to firearms making an awful recipe, for instance — some sentiments are: Namely, residents’ “pride” and posturing about what’s outside their front doors. Check it out, and let us know what you think in the comments.
Warning: Contains strong language, and literally insane levels of usage of the n-word.

apart from wanting to move to norway (recently voted the best place to live in the world for the fourth year in a row), here is what i have to say to this:

anybody in the audience ever been hit by a car?

That’s pretty well done, sets quite a mood. I’d watch that movie.

But any documentary can make A sentiment feel like THE sentiment. If I talk to 100 people and string together the 10 who make my point, 10% looks like a groundswell.

I’m not claiming that most people denounce violence - I don’t know. I’m just saying that this doesn’t prove to me that most condone it.

I don’t want to move to Norway.

What a crappy looking exploitive piece.

By the way the only way I would move to Norway is to start an early 90’s era, 2 chord, black metal band. Sometime through recording our second record I would kill the keyboardist and blame it on Norway being a violent country.

…then make a documentary on it.

Called Crime in Norway: Blood, Murder, & Mead.

I wrote about this piece too, and I did a little surfing around, and there’s a pretty extraordinary network of videos out there. Surf around on Gillie Da Kid’s myspace page and you’ll find some pretty amazing almost neighborhood-level disputes being worked out via youtube. Kind of alarming, but it helps put some of the content of the trailer in perspective.
