Rumors Of Popped Festival’s Screwed-Ness Greatly Exaggerated
When news broke last week that C3 Productions, the organizers behind Lollapalooza, were ready to make a deal with Fairmount Park to produce a multi-day summer music festival on Belmont Plateau, tongues began wagging all over town: Wasn’t that the very same plan Alexis Rosenzweig, principal behind Popped! Philadelphia, had been eyeing up all along? Well, yes and no. After a rough-and-tumble first year, the Popped crew are announcing that the second annual music fest is confirmed for June 20-22, 2008 at Drexel University. Shows will be held in a variety of Drexel locations: The Armory, Buckley Field, 33rd Street, the Drexel Volleyball Court, and surrounding land. And in conjunction with new creative partner/Roots manager Rich Nichols and operations director Amy Gaio, look for Popped! to be back in your world big time in the coming months. In addition to the Roots’ headling gig — they’re playing Things Fall Apart in its entirety — Popped! will also be featuring 3 stages and a dance tent, with booking agencies Biz 3 and Windish Agency each curating a stage for a day. Sponsors are still being lined up (full disclosure: our own Ruth Carpenter is on the board), but it’s said to be a mix of local and national companies. What about the bands? Popped isn’t saying yet, but something tells us it’s gonna be a far cry from last year’s fest.
