Gyro Worldwide Announces Ad campaign:
Philly is More Ugly When You Sleep Over!Philadelphia, PA – Well, the ugly torch has officially been passed from Baltimore to Philadelphia. After an online poll of 60,000 people, Travel & Leisure Magazine has awarded Philadelphia the title of “Ugliest City in America.”
In a recent episode of John Favreau’s Dinner for Five on IFC, John Waters remarked that when Baltimore was voted the city with the ugliest people, he approached the Mayor and tried to convince him that Baltimore should embrace this and make it the focus of their official tourism campaign because “ Everyone wants to see the ugliest people. They don’t want to see the second ugliest, they want to see the ugliest.”
While the Mayor of Baltimore might not have bought it, the clever minds at Gyro Worldwide do and they are taking cues from Mr. Waters and running with the idea, by turning it into an official tourism campaign for The City of Brotherly Love. The world-famous ad agency, known for its brazen, cheeky creative, has developed a stellar campaign that capitalizes on the city’s proclaimed ugliness to attract tourists.
Gyro CEO Steven Grasse remarks, “Walking around this city is like rubbernecking at a car accident. It’s hideous, but you just can’t stop gawking. It’s fascinating and deeply disturbing at the same time.” “I’m from Philly. My ancestors are from Philly. And it seems every day I see new levels of ugliness. It’s time we cashed in on our heinousness.”
Gyro is proposing the campaign to the board of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation. In fact, Gyro thinks it would be a good idea to build off the current, “ Philly’s More Fun When You Sleep Over” campaign by altering it to “ Philly’s More Ugly When You Sleep Over.” Anyone who has been out in the city after midnight knows this to be true.
Building on the GPTMC’s current marketing strategy to target younger, hip visitors, with their uwishunu.com site, Gyro is proposing that the campaign run in hipster publications that beautiful people look at such as Surface, BlackBook and Nylon. “ Beautiful People love to feel superior to everyone else,” comments Grasse.
“Come to Philadelphia for an ego boost. Even if you are kind of ugly yourself, you’ll feel really great after a weekend in Philly.”
The idea behind the campaign is simple. Let the city’s ugliness speak for itself with simple, documentary style photography that tells it like it is. The photos are accompanied with simple lines such as: “Please Don’t Feed the Animals,” “ Come Visit the Nation’s Only Citywide Freak Show!”,” “Everyday is Halloween in Philadelphia”,” Philly’s Even More Ugly When You Sleep Over” “ And “Come Visit Uglytown U.S.A!”
In addition to the traditional print campaign, Gyro also has plans to launch a full-scale marketing program featuring their signature guerilla marketing tactics.

At first I was offended by the poll but now after looking closer I can kinda see their point. Gyro definitely has a good tourism campaign idea. Hopefully it won’t take away from the Philadelphia Zoo.

If this Grasse douche does this I’m leaving this city.
Oh and Baltimore wasn’t on the list of America’s favorite cities.

Maybe they were drunk when they made this and that’s why it seemed so funny to them. Bit of an obvious joke.
