This Week On The Philebrity Player: Jack Peñate’s Matinee
We found out about Jack Peñate last spring, when a chance seven-inch single discovery led us down a rabbit hole of salivating UK press, mucho bloggage and, finally — yay — more seven-inch singles. Each performance we saw and track we heard was a revelation to us for just as much what it was as what it wasn’t: In yon Jack, just 22 years of age, you’ve got an English archetype that’s long been missing from the UK pop spectrum — he’s a soul boy. As in blue-eyed, and Dexy’s Midnight Runners, the Style Council, early Lloyd Cole, the Housemartins, the C86 movement, and just about every other thing we’ve been patiently waiting for the last 20 years, wrapped up in a fetal position reading old issues of the NME in a cold corner of our lonely flats. OK, we kid. But not about all that soulboy rebirth stuff. We’re deadly derious about that. And we’re wild for this Jack Peñate guy. Ladies and gentlemen, his debut album, Matinee. Enjoy.
