Local Hideous Dog To Be Subject Of New Art Show
There’s no telling when an icon will be born — but when you see it, you know. So look into the eyes of Fishtown’s Pee Wee Martini, currently the third ugliest dog in the world, just try and tell us you don’t see a bit of yourself. Well, you are not alone. Tomorrow, at Amble Gallery and Books in NoLibs, there is a recepetion for “The Pee Wee Martini Show,” a group showing which meditates on Philadelphia’s newest style icon. Over 24 artists have contributed Pee Wee-related works to the show, including members of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, who’ve included the show as part of their 10th anniversary celebration. Why Pee Wee? “I think the fact that he’s so different and weird-looking makes him awesome,” says PCS member Jeffro Kilpatrick. “Thelonious Monk coined the phrase, ‘Ugly Beauty.’ Leonard Cohen wrote a lyric, ‘We are ugly, but we have the music.’ And he’s right. Look at all the good art and music in this world. For the most part, it’s made by the weirdos and freaks [...] And I like that there are nice guys out there like Pee Wee in the limelight, making ugly look good.” Work it, Pee Wee.
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 4th from 7pm to 11pm
Amble Gallery and Books, 1001-13 N. 2nd Street, Suite 27 (across from Liberties Walk)
