Dept. Of Art In The Woods: Supplemental Shrubbery Sound Source

s4The images you see at left are part of Chris Vecchio’s latest installation along a pathway at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, and they’re freaking us out, baby. Using PVC pipe, motion sensors and tape loops, Vecchio’s Supplemental Shrubbery Sound Source is a kind of random sound-installation triggered by which direction you’re walking in and where the various motion sensors pick up on you. (Think of it as the trippiest burglar alarm ever.) The sound samples themselves range from “natural” — birds singin’, bees buzzin’ — to “man-made”; and how you hear the differences between the two creates the experience for you. Weird? Hella. Awesome? Kinda. Especially on a day like this. Get out there and test yourself, if you can.
