This Weekend: Real Talk
FRIDAY:
>>> Who in their right mind would pile five bands on top of one another on a Friday night at Tritone? We don’t know, but to paraphrase the good ol’ Mode, we think that God’s got a sick sense of humor, and when we die, we expect to find him laauuuggghhh-ing. Nevertheless, A Sunny Day In Glasgow are brilliant, Sam Champion and The Swimmers are serviceable, and we don’t know what’s up with the other ones, having not yet laid eyes. But think of this show as the 2007 Philly Indie Rock Whitman Sampler, so you can catch up pretty good with one shot. Sure, Sam Champion don’t live here, but they do live in Brooklyn, which, as you know, is the Philly Waiting List.
>>> Bands you should thank your lucky stars for still existing: His Name Is Alive. Leader/primo American weirdo Warn Defever has taken this band through Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, gospel phases and more, and each mask is just as bizarre-yet-populist as the one before it. At the Chapel At The First Unitarian Church.
>>> After a false start early in the summer, John Redden’s Crescendolls party is back with the Club Lifestyle dancers; Ian St. Laurent also DJs and sulks. At Level, up around 21st and Market, so this definitely counts as a field trip.
SATURDAY:
>>> Red alert party pick: Roll Call at The M Room with Emynd & Bo Bliz and Caps&Jones, hosted by K Mass aka Kenneth Masters. Facts: We love K Mass, can’t understand why he’s not internationally famous-er, people have been banging our ears about the greatness of Caps&Jones for like a year now, and Emynd and Bo (White T’s, White Belts) always deliver. Wondering where the next wave of national post-Diplo/Spank hype is gonna come from? Huh? IT’S GONNA COME FROM THIS ROOM, ON THIS NIGHT.
>>> More rockism: Jamie T/Illinois/The Yah Mos Def at the North Star is definitely the most solid bill of the night, and well-put together, too: Not too hard, not too sweet. Up in the Abu-Daba (that’s Upper Darby, freshman), Interpol and The Liars — who we think might be one of those bands that insist you don’t use a “the” before their name but everybody does anyway, forcing them to make one awful record after another out of spite — take on the Tower Theater. Say hi to Sweens, spinning in between bands on the mezzanine.
>>> The Badminton Stamps people have a real knack for sneaking in the most fucked-up, passive aggressive shit possible about Philebs on their blog, but you know what? Living well is the best revenge, motherfuckers. Go to their party, Mission 300, because it’s all-you-can-bowl, all-you-can-drink, and Bleached Black/Oh Murder! are DJing. But don’t talk to the hosts. They’re only gonna try and tell you that Tokyo Police Club is really great and that Maria T is really nice once you get to know her. Shh, be quiet, I’m throwin’ rocks, Donnie.
SUNDAY:
>>> There’s no way Musiq Soulchild isn’t gonna get into some heavy Marvin Gaye shit on his 30th birthday at the Electric Factory. This is the only show in town this weekend where panties will be thrown. So take it under advisement.
>>> Moved from the TLA, Black Lips are now sludgin’ it up at the Khyber with Philebrity’s own Jerry’s Kids, Dark Horse & The Carousels; bonus points for the that upstairs $10 all you can drink thing they have every Sunday. Q: Can you be on two floors at once powerdrinking? A: If you do it right.
>>> Back at The M Room, there’s another one of those Aussie pop shows that seem to be rolling through weekly right about now. Of the crop, we like Fred Astereo, a sort of crooning homage to the La Decadanse section of Other Music. Peep the link, and get on down.
