Why Oh WHYY: That’s Why They Call It BROADCASTING

whyyPoor, pitiful WHYY execs: Can you recall a time in recent memory when a media outfit has gone down like sillier bitches? Don’t they understand that this is THE INFORMATION AGE? So why call up the City Paper and ask them to take posts down regarding William Marrazzo & Co.‘s alleged greed, laziness and general douchebaggery? Especially when their own ex-employees (a group apparently growing in numbers by the minute) do a damn fine job of keeping everybody informed of malfeasances large and small, anyway? BITCHES DON’T YOU KNOW? Pfft. Do whatever you want, I guess. Just don’t drag Marty into this, OK? We looooove her. PS. to WHYY disgruntleburgers: Why didn’t we get a letter? What, you don’t like Man Man jokes? [CP/Phawker]

“Why didn’t we get a letter?”

They did send you one, albeit, a metaphysical one.

Word on the nonprofit street sez the HR person is doing parking attendant duty bec. of a hiring freeze, which also may explain why they same jobs that have been open since January and the last pledge drive shortfall have been on their board so long. That or maybe they need to hire a webmaster, but there’s a freeze, ya see.

Also, is it just the fact that I only got four hours sleep or was Phawker’s contribution truly less comprehensible than its usual fare.

Marty should join the people’s media movement and start spitting from Radio Volta. Then again, the only time I heard her stammer and waffle on her show was when Harry Shearer was taking the NPR “flagship” dynasties to task. Then again again, you didn’t hear that frankness on the preproduction interview Oz of Fresh Air, so the Moss-Coane gets points for that.

So, I remember a full staff meeting years ago at WHYY where this particular HR dude, as a joke (I assume) proceeds to tell us that the “War of Northern Aggression” is what he called “The Civil War” and should be referred to in that manner. I didn’t think much of it at the time this, being first thing in the morning and I hadn’t had enough coffee. But he said it in a whole room full of WHYY staffers, using a microphone (badly) hooked into big speakers.

A couple of years later a fellow staff member (African-American) is called on the carpet for some policy transgression and the rumors are that the HR Person said during this meeting that “it wasn’t a hanging offense.” WTF? What kind of stamp collection does this HR Person have at home?

Is diversity just a buzz word and paid lip service by these predominantly white, Head Cheeses at WHYY?

Is competent leadership just being paid lip service? As long as the Board doesn’t get dragged into the mud, whatever changes that can be expected because of that letter, it will be too little, too late.

Face it, we are all scared of losing something we value because of this, our reputation, a friendship, peace of mind, a job we love, a place we like, a mission that is important, an inflated sense of self worth, the ability to just tell a subordinate anything and not get any guff back.

I’m curious how the Executive bonuses will shake out this year, they probably don’t get evaluated on employee morale. Anyone know?
