This Weekend: The Calm Before The Storm
FRIDAY:
>>> First and foremost, today is the official start of the 2007 Live Arts & Fringe Festival, which henceforth shall be referred to in these pages as simply “Fringe.” Our dedicated coverage of the Fringe begins in about an hour or so with the launch of our Fringe page on Philebs, so check back around 2pm for that. By the grace of God, Kelly White has taken the leap into the Fringe book head first — this year, the Fringe is presenting an unprecedented 3,174,867 shows — and she’ll be damned if she’s not gonna make some sense of it all for you for the next two weeks. So there is that.
>>> Can anybody tell us why bands and DJs book parties and shows in dank clubs on obviously summerfied and BBQ-centric weekends like this one? This will always mystify us, but if you don’t feel like skinny dipping and roasting flesh, you could do worse than go see VHS Or Beta and the insanely buzzed-about Walter Meego at Johnny Brenda’s. Because people will actually dance, and the pavement outside at Frankford & Girard is like the new, new, new spot. All they need is a bench and, well, never mind, there’s too much deference to Billburg as it is.
>>> Barring that, though, work those connects: Someone you know has a shore house, a lake house, a pool, a roof or a yard. Get there immediately: The big annual WMGK parade of awesome is going to start any minute now. Please alert your favorite Philebrity employee if you have such a situation going on, we promise to bring beer or water balloons.
SATURDAY:
>>> Read that last pick over again, and if you are THAT desperate for what Jonathan Richman so sagely called “The Dating Bar,” go to Medusa for Sex From Above with the Hurrah! guys. You’re on your own.
>>> This will also probably get talked about in the Fringe picks, but Corn-Mo at Silk City is definitely one of the hotly-tipped Fringe parties.
>>> And this is more like it: Happy 1st Birthday to our friends at Grasshopper. Hang out in Washington Square Park for a bit and then pop over for cocktails, sale, etc.
SUNDAY:
>>> Two rather don’t-miss things that are not bathing suit related going down tonight: Acid Mother’s Guru bring the full gale force of Japanese stonerdelia to Johnny Brenda’s. And this is one you can take your friend who likes metal or Dave Matthews to: The Acid Mother’s people are so far out there that they pretty much transcend genre to the point where they get into that whole Bob Marley realm where anybody can get into them.
>>> And then there is the [click.]/Rizumu all-night rager at The Vaccuum, and pretty much everybody you know who is in the city will be at this. The Institubes Paris Terror Club are the guests of honor tonight, and this is one of those Dave P bookings that is so far ahead of the curve that even we don’t really know what it’s about. Ask your DJ friend if you care, but this is more of a tribal gathering, to be honest. Sorry DJs: Nobody cares. Now you know how the bands feel. More info on this one here.
MONDAY:
>>> Back in the day, Labor Day used to fill us with massive, crushing dread. It’s like the Sunday night anxiety thing, on steroids. But these days, we get kind of psyched. Sure, we’re bummed that the summer slide is ending — oh, how we love the slide — but September brings wild things to one and all. For us, that means future Foggy Notions, new blogs, Philebrity’s 3rd anniversary right around the corner, a CMJ show, The Philebrity Weekender (uh… any ideas, anybody?) and not least, the return of the Tastykake Pumpkin Pie. For you, it means a new party season, something at work that you probably won’t hate, new clothes and as much Indian Summer as you can get out there and stake for yourself. Maybe you’ll meet somebody new. Maybe you’ll dump the dead weight you’ve been dragging around. Maybe we’ll finally change the name of the “This Weekend” post to “UNRELIABLE HOROSCOPE.” We want you to know that Philebrity supports you in all of these endeavors, and we’ll be here to walk you through the heavy changes. So on Monday, when you get home from the BBQ, clean your apartment. It will be the last time you will be there for the rest of the month.

I met two girls at the Vaccuum party and they said they were ballerinas. One was named Becky can someone help me find them?
