This Week On The Philebrity Player: The A-Sides’ Silver Storms
The record we bring to you today on The Philebrity Player is one that’s near and dear to our hearts, to be sure. The A-Sides‘ Silver Storms, presented here in full three weeks before its release, has been alive for us so long only in the realm of hand-burned CD-R that we’ve worn grooves into it; never mind that it marks a huge achievement for the group and that the A-Sides’ signing to the Vagrant label represents one of the biggest signings of a Philly band in years. No, Silver Storms is eminiently listenable, doing things that you didn’t think bands were really supposed to do anymore: Namely, sound big. A little bit of back story: The A-Sides started work on the record last year with producer Brian McTear. But by the time they working on basic tracks, a deal for the record went south — undeterred, the group bet the farm and kept on pushing on anyway. That little bit of against-all-odds informs the outsize romance on Silver Storms. But really, that’s not the half of it, and please do not get the idea that Silver Storms is one of those band-against-the-record-industry kind of records; rather, it’s boy-against-world, and somewhere not far off, there is a girl on the other side of a bedroom window listening intently. You’ll hear echoes of New Order as quickly as you will Tommy James & The Shondells. And for those of you that picked up on the band circa the garage-y stomp of “Sidewalk Chalk,” don’t freak: The A-Sides still pack a bombast, ardent and true. We could go on about it, but why should we, when the evidence is right here: Ladies and gentlemen, Silver Storms, you official Indian summer make-out/drive-fast record. We’re so proud.
