This Weekend: Kick Out The Jams, MYOF-ers!
FRIDAY:
>>> Now is the summer of our discontent. The clock is ticking down, and maybe you are out of money, or maybe just out of gas. There are bands and parties, there are always bands and parties, but tonight, Philadelphia, something greater is on the line: YOU. So what do you do? It’s high time you made your own fun. And you can take from that whatever your brain suggests first. But get out there and make it: It’s later than you think.
>>> Or — I always kinda feel for the thing that comes immediately after the “THE COSMOS DEPEND ON YOU NOT GOING TO A SHOW/DJ NIGHT” soliloquy — you could go to: [click.] with Dave P and Pink Skull with the free Workseverytime®; the high-art, baggy-panting debut show of Christopher Tucker’s Orphan Family (see: The Situation, Meme) at JB’s; and (I think this would actually definitely go over big with the make-your-own-fun people) Stevie Nicks at the Borgata. Sayin’.
>>> Also, we found a really bizarre post-modern haiku in the listings. Ready?
Let Me Damage
Too Much Awesome
MUHAHAHAHA!
We don’t know what it means, but when we find out, we’ll let you know.
>>> This just in: Pop by the Franklin Institute from 6-9pm for some special Tut-fun: DJs Chad Brown The Lonesome Cowboy, Laris Kreslins and Alexis Rosenweig spin in the Planetrarium. Yes! Also, you can drink there. And they crank the AC like it’s a government office.
SATURDAY:
>>> Can’t get psyched about ANYTHING! Woooooo!!!!!!! But guess what: This Bleached Black flyer (at right) is fucking intense. Deal with it.
>>> Actually, that was a lie: At 9pm on Liberties Walk, Think Music is showing a few episodes of The Young Ones outdoors! Love this show. DEFINTELY COUNTS AS MAKING YOUR OWN FUN ‘COS IT’S OUTSIDE.
SUNDAY:
>>> I’m telling ya, in a perfect world, we’d all run on that topsy-turvy service-industry schedule, where your Sunday night is always like 500 times as wild as your Friday night. It’s good for the soul, puts hair on your chest. DO go see Pink Reason, one of the linchpins of this whole Columbus scuzz rock revival you’re going to be reading about in Mojo magazine 18 months from now. (Plus, their last LP was released on Philly’s very own Siltbreeze so, yes, it does count as a vote for the home team.) Plus, you get Kurt Vile and his hair getting down on some fuzz, and we do not mean police or vagina. Do this. Do it. Fuck it: SHOW OF THE WEEK. Let’s just call it. At Johnny Brenda’s. Somebody cue up a Kurt Vile mp3:
You’re not going to work on Monday, or all of next week. Perhaps some ghost version of you is, but that’s not you, baby. That’s not you.
>>> How do you follow that up? By making sure you drop your ass in a cab with enough time to still hit Fast Cheap And Outta Control at Fluid. Staunchly in the MYOF (make your own fun) camp for many years now — yes, it’s a bar, but you have to take off your clothes and if that, friends, is not making one’s own fun, I just couldn’t tell you what is — Fast Cheap is perfect for nights like this. You’re on the eve of the summer’s destruction, and redemption in these last days will come from wherever you take it. Now go in peace, and may all that is wild and unfettered live within you. For you are this dying civilization’s greatest hope.
