If Ed Rendell And Peter Jackson Will It, It Must Be So

bridge.jpgAre we going to start the fear-mongering and talk about Bridgegate like everyone else? No, we’re just enthralled by this one story. According to AP’s Peter Jackson, the Guv reckons that our bridges are safe after the Minneapolis collapse. Oh, not that Peter Jackson, although if anyone could reassure us of no impending disaster, it’d be him. Nope, not our 30 truss bridges, so y’all can just relax. If it bothers you that much, just don’t leave the city. Wait, are you sure?

Of the 14,868 state-owned bridges in Pennsylvania that are longer than 20 feet, about one-quarter are considered structurally deficient. No other state has more or a larger percentage of major bridges in that category, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation analysis of federal statistics compiled in December.

So you’re not sure, then? But the guv just said!

Rendell said he believes Pennsylvania’s highway system is safe.

“I think people can drive the interstates, go over the bridges, with a reasonable degree of confidence,” he said.

What, pray tell, is a reasonable degree of confidence? Is that like an Associate’s in Liberal Arts? ‘Cause it sure sounds that way. Can you please put the Legos away and call a few architects in? Your Philebrity Lexicon word for the day: pontifex, meaning bridge-builder. Yeah, send a couple of those guys this way.

Ed, what about the South Street bridge?

    Remember this:

January 24, 2006 – The South Street Bridge is open again after workers from the Philadelphia Streets Department finished their latest round of repairs… The bridge was closed for most of the day Monday after a steel plate covering an expansion joint came loose.

It was the latest in a series of problems for the 82-year-old bridge, which is scheduled to be replaced next year.

City engineers say the bridge is structurally sound.
