This Week On The Philebrity Player: Meg Baird’s Dear Companion
We knew it, felt it, started living it the second we heard it: Meg Baird’s Dear Companion might be the best acoustic-guitar-and-voice album since Nick Drake’s Pink Moon. And unlike lots of times when you hear a record you love and want to hide it away in your room, we’ve been dying for this thing to come out for months now, just so that other people can hear it, thereby allowing Dear Companion to cease its status as our Amazing Folk Music Snuffleupagus. Like the aforementioned Drake record, Baird’s first solo album — you may know her from some other band called Espers — does an astounding lot with just a little. Finger-picking, some traditionals, some covers, a few originals, all showcasing that high, weary voice. The result is a pretty timeless record. But as always, don’t take our word for it: Let your lazy summer bliss begin right here.
