Another Bar Down: Copa Too To Close
From the desk of Christopher Doyle, friend to Philebrity, server of fine Margaritas:
THATS RIGHT, AFTER 22 YEARS OF BUSINESS WE WILL BE NO LONGER. AS A VIBRANT PART OF THE CENTER CITY COMMUNITY IT’S A COMPLETE BUMMER. HAVING BEEN A PATRON THEN A STAFF MEMBER IT DEEPLY SADDENS ME TO SEE THE PLACE GO. LISA PUT UP THE BEST FIGHT SHE COULD IN TRYING TO KEEP THE PLACE OPEN. SHE IS AN AMAZING LADY WHO TOOK CARE OF HER STAFF IN ENDLESS WAYS AND SUPPLIED THE PUBLIC WITH A TIMELESS VENUE TO CONGREGATE AT. SHE HAS TO VACATE THE BUILDING AS SOON AS JUNE 3RD. THATS ALL THE FUCKING TIME THEY GAVE HER THOSE ASSHOLES. SO, IF YOU WANT TO GET YOUR LAST BIT OF COPA TOO! IN, PLEASE STOP IN BEFORE WE CLOSE THE DOORS. GRAB A MARGARITA, BURGER, BEER, OR EVEN JUST STOP IN TO SAY HELLO AND GOODBYE.
So, if you know of any bars that are hiring, we think Doyle needs a job.

This reminds me of the fable from Aesop about the dog with a bone in its mouth that saw his reflection in the water and lost his bone trying to go after what he thought was the bigger one.
If there’s one thing to avoid in urban retail — restaurants are retailers — in real estate markets other than New York City, it’s turnover. The owner of this place had one tenant for 22 years, and that kind of consistency is money in the bank.
Now comes some prolonged period of tenants in a revolving door — clothing boutique that fails, sundry store that fails, Dunkin’ Donuts that fails — that gives the owner nothing but headaches, until one day we find newspaper covering the windows and no one moving in. This is what most of Philadelphia looked like in the 70s and 80s.
