Counting Down To 10K Phillies Losses Is Booming Business… But Who’s Buying?

10kPlease pardon the second Megadeth reference in a week, but we’re wondering these days what the great benefit of the current countdown is. After all, we must all face this — 10,000 Phils losses is an inevitability, a certainty: Barring a giant meteor somehow killing the franchise, the Phils will eventually lose 10,000 games, and soon. Given time, every team in the league will. But here’s what’s bugging us: How much local hacks are willing to milk the joke. Sure, you’ve seen PhillySucks.com, the doomsday clock running down how many days, hours, minutes it’s been since any Philly franchise has won a championship. But have you seen Countdown To 10,000? Admittedly, there’s not much to see, save for a scrubby little scroll with updates and a screed proclaiming how “The Philadelphia Phillies franchise has LOST the most games in ALL OF PRO SPORTS history.” (Yes, this site was also designed in 1998.) Also, this guy has some Ryan Howard-related domain names for sale, he’s not afraid to tell you. But most disheartening is the amount of column space DMac is dedicating to Philadelphia Will Do’s Road To 10,000 Losses: Dude updates that shit like every day, and each day, it’s weaker than the day before, especially now that, not for nothing, the Phils are playing some pretty good ball. (It’s also extra-annoying given DMac’s tendency to smother a good joke like he was Sexy American Girlfriend all over Long Duck Dong.) But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. The point is this: We think that right now – the Road to 10K thing and its attendant snark — is the moment all the old Philly fan clichés grow tired and stale to the point of actually becoming offensive again or, just as likely, for the first time ever. Either that, or we have simply have yet to hear anyone be truly funny about all this.
