This Week On The Philebrity Player: Hail Social’s Modern Love And Death

hail socialFirst Jarvis, now this: Do you remember when mind-blowingly awesome records weren’t coming out every week? My name’s Joey Sweeney, and I don’t. To local music fans, the name Hail Social should not be new, but tell you what, hoss: Their sound is. On their sophomore LP, Modern Love And Death, the band distills that whole skinny-tie/Duran Duran thing into a multi-flavored ice cream cone that has Hall & Oates sprinkles (”jimmies” where I come from), and a delicious Tears For Fears cone. Are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down here? This is a blue-eyed soul update, in line with Phoenix and Erland Øye, but it also loves Phil-era Genesis and, God help them, The Fixx. I have listened to this 15 times in the last week easily. I can’t get enough of it. And I can’t figure out why Hail Social are not on MTV ’round the clock, playing volleyball with tanned bible college students and wearing the freshest gear as they cruise out Santa Monica Boulevard with the dudes from Entourage. After all, Hail Social have penetrated the psyche of the pop beast: It’s only a matter of time before they get inside its bloodstream and start doing the best thing any band can do — smashing the system from within. That, and getting your own animated series. Either will do.

If mp3s were made of vinyl, I would’ve had to replace my copy of “Heaven” as of sometime last week. It’s that good.

I’d like you to name at least one band that’s been on MTV - before you were a fan - and you still liked them.
