Cute Band Alert: Rarebirds
South Philly’s Rarebirds are one of those bands we worry about: The name is too good, and hopefully, there are no other Rarebirds out there claiming the name, so hopefully, you kids have your copyrights in order. It comes up now because the ‘birds are having their record release tomorrow night at Johnny Brenda’s, and we were lucky enough to scope out the record. By turns Cranberries-ish and definitely girl-pop all the way around (with a little bit of scruff around the collar for good measure), Rarebirds really start pulling you in when they get atmospheric and even a little dark. Witness these from the self-titled Rarebirds debut:

I’ve always hated the Cranberries, but this is lovely stuff–and indeed a great name.
One small item: although poetic license trumps all, the correct term is not “aviatress”, but “aviatrix” (even better though, isn’t it?)
