PW Sale Update: Village Voice Reveals Secret Pigeonshit Fetish

To follow up my report last Sunday on the sale offering of Philadelphia Weekly: Insiders say the most active prospect is Village Voice Media, the alt-world giant that publishes 17 papers, including the Voice. I hear that execs for Philly Weekly parent company Review Publishing L.P. met with VVM bigs in New York, and that parties differ on the scope of the deal. Review wants to package the Weekly and related South Philly Review, Atlantic City Weekly and Southwest Philadelphia Review, but VVM supposedly wants only the Weekly. A VVM spokeswoman declined to comment, and Review execs have not returned e-mails.

To any Voice folks reading this, think of it this way: You’re buying the sinking ship, but the leaks? They’re for free, baby. And, uh, so are the other three papers. And we’re pretty sure the pony guy comes with the deal, too.

The Weekly is in bad shape, no doubt, but VVM? Up until they bought the Voice, they were known as “New Times,” as in the PHOENIX New Times. Most of their acquisitions are re-named and formatted. The Voice was allowed to keep their name so long as they went on sucking.

Now maybe I’m still a bit sore over the whole 5-6 population mess, but suddenly Tierney doesn’t seem like such a bad buyer.

Is this a belated April Fools’ joke? It certainly feels that way.
