Kelly White Explains It All: Philly Style Photo Blogs
Photoblogging usually means one thing: The parents in York/Pottstown/Paoli gave you a new camera because they caught you frowning, and after snapping Myspace pics in countless angles, you got to thinking, what if there is room for me in the blogging lifeboat after all? Wouldn’t it be avant-garde if I posted party pics and shots of random fashion convicts on my very own bloggy thing a la Mark Hunter? And everyone would delight in knowing that girl with the silly hat and neon socks on Chestnut Street! Content be damned, shutterbugs simply upload their evenings on the town without farting a thought. Sometimes they even type sentences, like “Your style is epic!” Then they start to wonder if they should transfer to UArts with immediacy and major in photography, or head to NYC to pursue design because they see an entire clothing line based on some kids they found in West Philly.
After the jump, our contenders…
Broad & Market have staked their fashion-hunting grounds: Temple’s Main Campus and somewhere on Walnut St. in between American Apparel and that homeless guy’s personal space. They actually interview their subjects, which is a tad heartwarming and personal, moreso than a Last Night’s Party shot of some pantyless deb doing blow. We’d like to see them branch out, venture into the nightlife scene, or hide in the dressing room at Grasshopper. Can we get a photo of a dapper old man with a badass cane strolling through the racks of Daffy’s?
New Machine Addict is like the kind of blog we would sleep with but never take home to meet the parents. The shots are amateur, the ramblings are frantic, and we see no reason to ever bookmark this page. But, NMA is new, and we shall grant them a trial period of attention.
Faceadelphia is the Phillyist of photoblogs. If you can get past that, there are some royal finds like this gem. But hardly ever. We suggest they stop taking pictures of their study buddies.
[Editor’s note: Kelly White is Philebrity’s intern and, as it happens, second cousin. As she states in her MySpace profile, “I have Arctic Splash in my blood and blood in my Arctic Splash.” Blood in, blood out, Kells.]

What–photos and chitchat with the subjects aren’t content? Were you wanting, some metaphysical wankery from these kids? I like the fact that the content is about immediate pleasures–clothes, weather, food, music, etc. Individually they may seem trivial, but en masse they have a kind of profundity. It’s the stuff of life, after all.
None of the approach the Sartorialist, but you know, I like the fact these kids aren’t fashion industry goons. It’s kind of sweet.
Girls in Philly *should* wear more cute skirts, actually.
I should do a pocket square folding workshop. Or whip up an omelette.

re: Lord Whimsy
could you also include how to make a nice looking bow-tie in your workshop?

A very accurate analysis of photoblogging.
