“We’re the Police and we’re back,” announced lead singer Sting from the stage of the Grammy Awards, heralding a tour that has long been a dream for music fans. After electrifying performances the following morning after the Grammy’s at the Whiskey on Los Angeles’ famed Sunset Strip, Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers are making a return to the stage together for the first time in nearly 14 years. The band last performed in Philadelphia at JFK Stadium in August of 1983.

In 1977, The Police stormed the music scene by blending reggae, punk, jazz and rock. Sting, Copeland and Summers created an unmistakably nuanced sound filled with evocative melodies, infectious lyrics and rock & roll swagger. The Police dominated the charts and radio airwaves worldwide with five no. 1 albums and a succession of top 10 hit singles. In the six years they were together, The Police became one of the world’s most famous bands, earning six Grammy Awards and countless fans around the globe.

Fiction Plane opens both shows.

OOO… a Police reunion tour …who knew that lutes were so expensive!?!

  2. mitchconnor Says:

    Now now…

Sting can rot for all I care, and Stewart Copeland has made some bad decisions (Oysterhead, anyone?), but Andy Summers is my man. His influence on my guitar playing cannot be overstated.

  3. lifeatthemovies Says:

Oh, man. You play guitar like Andy Summers? You must be soooo cool. I’d love to check out your MySpace page and put you in my top 8 and review you on Pitchfork and snuggle up to your burned 4-song demo with a fancy printed label all night long.

  4. mitchconnor Says:

Saying “Andy Summers is a big influence on my guitar playing” does not translate into “I play guitar just like Andy Summers.” I was referring to things like his overall subtlety, his sense of phrasing, and so on - that’s what I took from him. Never once have I spent a day playing along to Reggatta de Blanc over and over again.

And hey, guess what? Many guitarists you’d read about or review on Bitchfork or any other site would not play the way they do if not for Andy, whether they realize it or not.

I wasn’t posting to show everyone how cool I am. Stupid bullshit posturing is of zero value to the way I live. But if that’s your thing, then go for it.
