This Weekend: Later, Bader!
FRIDAY:
>>> Good god, the motherfucking Photon Band! YES! It has been a dog’s age ‚Äî literally ‚Äî since we’ve seen Art Difuria & Co. in action, and if you don’t know, now you do: The Photon Band are like our very own Guided By Voices. Sublime and strange, psych and pop and seriously olllllllld-er than dirt. But still the coolest people in any room. There’s gotta be some mp3s around here somewhere, oh wait, no there aren’t, and you know why? BECAUSE WE HAVE ALL THAT SHIT ON VINYL, and so should you. At Johnny Brenda’s with Like A Fox.
>>> At the Khyber, it’s Mixel Pixel for your digital robot rock needs. Dancefloor calculus yo.
>>> Golden Ball at the Pi Lam with The Subjects. Warning: If you yell “Toga!” at GB, they will totally take you seriously. They’re in the practice room cutting up sheets right now.
SATURDAY:
>>> Bands that talk so much shit on us we should be paying them a publicist’s fee: Jukebox Zeros and Beretta 76 ‚Äî B76 has a new one out over here ‚Äî wake up the tattoo brigade at the Khyber. Check’s in the mail, bitches!
>>> There is an acoustic music festival at the Rotunda with so many people playing on it that it can’t help but be a mellow time, just on account of the sheer amount of wood in the room. Read more about it in listings.
>>> And tonight we offer three hipster dance parties: One for the 13-year-old girl inside of you, another for the strangely social record nerd, and another one for people who have lots of friends in Pittsburgh. They are Madonna Michael Prince at The M Room, Bleached Black at Medusa and Philadelphiyinz at The Khyber, respectively. All worthy. And holy shit, look at the Khyber rackin’ it up in the picks this weekend! There’s life in the old dog yet!
>>> But this has got to be the PARTY OF THE WEEK: The Dating Game/A Mummer’s Happening. Get this: Space 1026 is starting their own Mummers comedy brigade, not even fucking around. This party is a benefit. From the press release:
We will have the Love Connection game: Roy Miranda, Brandon Joyce and Mike Robinson (Holland Boys/ King God) will be vying for the attentions of a mystery lady pilates instructor who loves music who was culled from the internet. Mindy, Amanda Blank and Emily Fabric Horse will be the suitors of a phd candidate in the temple philosophy department who runs an experimental fiction journal (zine). he was also found on the internet. In addition to this, we will have a kissing booth, mummers photo opportunity, and the opportunity to take a survey and be scientifically matched up with the love of your life. then at the end we will slow dance.
And we have it on good authority that Ryan Creed is in the kissing booth.
>>> We’ll be waving a longer goodbye to one Erik Bader next week, but suffice to say that Saturday is also “Later, Bader”, his going away party, at the Latvian Society. DJs Julia Factorial and Art Andrews (both WPRB) do it up, and man, Bader: Portland? Seriously? Jesus. For the uninitiated, the only reason to go to this would be if you’re friends with Bader OR want to snake one of Bader’s old friends since he won’t be around anymore. For once, there’s gonna be plenty of room on the ark.
