Kelly White Explains It All: Pound Cake In Peril!
The future of pound cake in a trans-fat-free city leaves us concerned for a local legend: Stock’s Bakery. Stock’s original recipe, beloved by droves of poundcake purists, dates back to the late 1930’s. In come the bad guys who want to take taste away from bakery cases city-wide: Bill #060958 is an amendment that would ban all use of trans fats in food establishments in Philadelphia. But that would be like removing the Rocky statue because people walked into it on purpose and were knocked unconscious. It’s just a matter of self-control and discriminating tastes.
“The same council members who are pushing the ban are the ones in here every week buying the cake and taking it back to City Hall”, says owner Mark Stock.
Oh really now. Way to set an example, hotshots. We think Stock’s pound cake should be exempted on historical prominence alone. If not, we foresee the black market of baked goods, wherein the buttery loaves are the most sought-after street drug. And prepare for that sad day when Philadelphians may no longer indulge in the East Coast’s finest delicacy: Pack your freezer with loads of the stuff for those hard times. We swear you’ll be a god on Ebay.
Dear Philadelphia, let us eat cake.

the sad thing is that many of the other Philly staples like various Tastykake items, etc will be exempt from the ban since it’s a pre-packaged food item … so those that probably need to take a ‘break’ from transfat will still have it at their disposal.
cutting transfat out of your diet is smart - however a city ban is a bit much … at least in the scope of problems facing the city.
