Launch Party: Philebrity Handicaps The Start-ups

launch partyYou know, in blog years, Philebrity is like a gagillion years old. So we know some shit, we’ve seen ‘em come and go. And rather than keep it all in when some website or other launches or relaunches, we feel it’s our duty to pass on the wisdom. It’s with this in mind that we started doing the feature called Launch Party recently. This is the ALL-PARTYTRAINSOLDIER edition, so buckle in.

After the jump, message board refugees, rainbowparty anthems and the American Apparel radio station.

rvngName: igetrvng.com
Type Of Publication: Nightlife promo/new music.
Target audience: PARTYTRAINSOLDIERS.
Assessment: The new site for Rvng — Dave P and Matt Werth’s party-throwing, mix-tape making social reconstructionist movement thing — is a vast improvement over the old one, which was a labarythine mess that totally just did not want to give you any information at all. The new site is a hybrid: party-info stop/mp3 blog/radio player, all of it useful, clean and fun. There’s also an archive of old Making Time flyers so finally you can start to maybe remember the last six years. On the other hand, it just may be too late altogether.
Chances of survival: Partytrainsoldiers never die, hoss, they just go to work at Gyro.

fun vampiresName: Fun Vampires
Type Of Publication: Group blog, pop culture division.
Target audience: Self-hating PARTYTRAINSOLDIERS.
Assessment: If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then yes, we here at Philebrity are very flattered indeed. But there’s a more to Fun Vampires than just that — with a panel of messageboard refugees (think BCO, Antiboard, OG Trackstar, if any of that means anything to any of you) at the helm, the FV’s are keeping a keen eye out towards the absurd. Nick Hans and Brian Labuda (perhaps the city’s best Oi!/twee DJ) are the bosses here. This is kind of like the Daily Miltonian if they just got into Space 1026 and Vice, which sounds like a dis on Fun Vampires, but really, it’s a dis on Bader at the Miltonian for being such an old grumpypuss who plays way too much World Of Warcraft. Fuck, how did this just turn into a thing about Bader? Jesus I suck. Anyway, Fun Vampires is a really fun read. We dig it.
Chances of survival: Fun Vampires will most likely exist until one of the alt-weeklies in town realizes that this is what they actually need to be doing with their blogs and hire all these kids away. If we are to use the cycle established by onetime Philebrity guest editor/present FV contributor Maggie Serota, they should be getting a call sometime next Wednesday.

vivaName: Viva-Radio
Type Of Publication: Internet radio
Target audience: Strangely, PARTYTRAINSOLDIERS for this one, too. Who knew they were such a growth market?
Assessment: Okay, so, Viva-Radio is this totally boss Internet radio station with utterly batshit selectors that play shit like “Eminence Front” by The Who, expect you to get into it, and then smile knowingly when you actually do. Which is a bit of a mindfuck, since the whole thing is underwritten by American Apparel and you want nothing more than to hate it with the heat of one thousand suns. But you can’t, just like you can’t stop having crazy sex fantasies about everyone you have ever seen in their ads, all in one big orgy while Devendra Banhart serenades us all from atop a giant golden phallus. Because it’s all fucking awesome. This is the problem with everything American Apparel does.
Chances of survival: This party will rage on right up until the moment Dov Chaney moonwalks into the courthouse to answer to groundbreaking charges of simultaneously raping someone else, while being raped himself.
