This Week On The Philebrity Player: Calla’s Strength In Numbers
The thing about the proposed dream-pop revival that comes up about every 18 months or so around here is that it’s hard to revive something that never went away. But what the new dreampop bands ‚Äî we’re talking like Mahogany and Relay ‚Äî do is constantly shapeshift. They just own too many pedals not to. And it’s hard not to lump NYC’s Calla in with them, even if they’ve been at it longer and owe too much of a debt to The Bad Seeds to ever get away with the happyfuntimes end of Proposition: Dream-Pop. The group’s latest, Strength In Numbers, is filled with the kind of rickety nightmares where, if you play your cards right, you just might get laid by a totally hot scary person. We intend this as praise, of course, but judge for yourself. It’s not out until February 20, but check it out here, and check the group out on Feb. 10th with Favourite Sons and The A-Sides at Johnny Brenda’s.
