Local AM Radio Shutdown Conspiracy Theory Reminds Everyone Just What They Loved About AM Radio In The First Place

For the conspiracy-minded, WHAT’s change could be a deliberate effort to silence black opinion. WHAT’s sale, though, was strictly business. Its black ownership, Inner City Broadcasting Corp., sold WHAT in November to Marconi Broadcasting for $5 million. Maroni has yet to say what format it will use. But one station that stands to gain is tiny WURD (900 AM). Purchased in 2003 by Cody Anderson (who once owned WHAT), WURD offers a complex mix of hosts, topics and issues geared toward blacks. It even has a jazz show on weekends.
In related news, presently displaced longtime WHAT host Mary Mason (pictured) has also been awarded “World’s Oldest Headshot Still In Use.”
