Readers Write: Smoking Ban Throws “Sunday Rule” Into A Tizzy
You aware that the Sunday 30% rule has been abolished? Before, you had to
have 30% or more in food sales to be open on Sunday if you were a bar. But
now there is no restriction, so Bob and Barbara’s and places like it (poss
McGlincheys) will open on Sundays.
We did not know that! But now that we do, consider it: Smoking on a Sunday in Bob & Barbara’s. Until January 8th, we truly do live in amazing times.

Probably a good idea to make sure that your readers aren’t writing from 14th Street before you post what they say. Unless the smoking ban repeal also included a clause in which Philadelphia seceded from Pennsylvania, the 30% Sunday law still applies. You know, since, like, it’s a state law and stuff.
“Hotel and restaurant liquor licensees, airport restaurant liquor licensees, municipal golf course restaurant liquor licensees and privately-owned public golf course restaurant licensees whose sales of food and nonalcoholic beverages are equal to thirty per centum or more of the combined gross sales of both food and alcoholic beverages may sell liquor and malt or brewed beverages on Sunday between the hours of eleven o‚Äôclock antemeridian and two o‚Äôclock antemeridian Monday upon purchase of a special permit from the board at an annual fee as prescribed in section 614-A of the act of April 9, 1929 (P.L. 177, No. 175), known as ‘The Administrative Code of 1929.’”
