Musical Rumblings: Internet Continues Special On Free Music And Information Today

adam>>> Attn. Adam Arcuragi fans: We just got word that Adam (pictured) and his band will be playing live on New York Public Radio today at 2pm. To listen, simply direct thy browser to WNYC: Soundcheck and have at it. There’s no telling what dude will say if you point a mic at him and tell him he’s addressing the City of New Yawk. [WNYC]
>>> And here’s a nice lil’ homebrew tip: Philebrity faves Blood Feathers have been leaking demos for download on their MySpace page about once a week recently. For those who couldn’t get enough of their self-titled debut, this is exciting and nice. Here’s the one we like best so far:
Blood Feathers: “I’ll Tell You Slowly (Demo)” [mp3]
>>> And finally: Not to be outdone by our own worst bands list a few days back, Blender ‚Äî it’s one of those magazines for people who still think rock criticism exists, don’t worry about it ‚Äî has let loose of its 50 Worst Artists In Music History list. And Philly is represented by only The Hooters. WTF? We was robbed! What, haven’t you guys ever heard Man Man? Jesus! No respect. Wait. Did we just think that or say that? [Stereogum]

Come on now, how can you hate on Man Man? That’s like making fun of a toddler for missing the potty on baby’s first Poop Poop. What I’m saying is…the band is a joke, right? They are laughing WITH us.

I like Man Man–beats all that drab, correct, pious indie-rock dreck clogging the streets. The animations for their videos are very well done, too.

That Blender list made some stupid choices. What’s wrong with Japan? I’m sticking up for Skinny Puppy too, though I’m probably among the few here who would do so.

Man Man… never got off on them, but I wouldn’t call them terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

“Correct” indie rock, indeed. It’s come to that, sadly.

Doesn’t Cinderella qualify as a Philly artist, and more importantly, I think they’re the missing #38.
Also, I take issue with Oingo Boingo being on that list. That appearance in “Back to School” alone gives them immunity.

Man Man are just to much empty shtick for my tastes. Weird by design with plenty of day-glo and paint accessories. I just find it distracting. I will give credit where it is due, though – very talented live band. I just think the albums are really bad irritating. Oddly enough, I liked Need New Body. They seemed more immediate to me and not trying too hard.

Some people find the truth about rock music–that all of it is an act–to be a bit upsetting. Don’t be fooled by the stressed denim and claims of authenticity, kids–it’s all showbiz. Thank god.

Long ago I recognized the ugly truth that there are no sacrosanct styles of rock. Any subculture or movement invariably becomes corrupted at some point. Along these lines, I think Vince Lombardi once said something like: “You have to be smart enough to understand [football], but dumb enough to think it’s important.” I think the same could be said for rock music – at least for those of us willing to laugh at ourselves.

I love rock ‘n roll and all the rest of it, but the institution itself is a giant fucking sham.
