When W. Thacher Longstreth died back in 2003, it was our belief that a certain part of the Philadelphia social strata died with him. You know, the kind of loopy, compassionate Republican who wore argyle everything who you thought was wildly out of touch right up until the moment you come across a picture of him chilling with TLC outside Geno’s. Longstreth was a class act all the way, from his much-commented-on wardrobe to his advice column, “Ask Thach,” which ran in Philadelphia Weekly in the years immediately preceding his earthly departure. But apparently that earthly departure was nothing more than a red herring, and lo and behold, our wishes have become reality: According to the City Hall website, Thach is still on City Council! Yep, right up there in room 594! Just go on up with your night vision goggles and see for yourself. All of which leaves one question: Thach, have you considered a run for mayor in ‘07? Don’t worry about the whole “dead” thing: Why, if his haircut is anything to go by, John Street hasn’t been alive since Earth Wind & Fire was on the charts! Think about it, buddy.
