This Week On The Philebrity Player: Connectivity! By Mahogany
We don’t use this phrase much around here, but hey: Shoegaze, nugaze, dreampop, whatever you wanna call it, Connectivity! by Mahogany is an instant classic. And we’re super-psyched that it’s this week’s record on The Philebrity Player. But you say you’ve been a lifelong phobic of the genres we just mentioned? Listen anyway. Because while the part-Brooklyn/part-Philly octet (that’s right, octet) has long been toiling in the pathways of Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, The Lilys and so on, Connectivity! has an accessibility to it that’s just as “pop” as it is “indie.” Because like all of those bands, what makes Mahogany great is their ability to couch actual great songs ‚Äî dance songs, romantic songs, brainy songs ‚Äî in all of the laboratory funk, schoolboy and schoolgirl voicing, and smoky fog that constitutes a trademark that they’re pushing way better than anyone else these days in that particular neck of the game. Connectivity! feels modern, feels like a discovery, feels like fun. Genres be damned. Instant classic. Not fooling around.

Beautiful album–perfect time of the year for a release like this. I suspect a few HNIA albums might also be lurking in their crates.

Was at the JB’s show back in Rocktober. They were fantastic. I don’t know why I didn’t buy the album then, but I’m getting it now.
