The Honeymoon Is Over: PNI Eyes Up Labor Strike

With 12 days until labor contracts are to expire, negotiators for Philadelphia Newspapers L.L.C. and the unions representing 2,000 workers at The Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News are still wrestling over key issues.

Pressmen and company negotiators remain divided on the crucial question of how many workers are needed to staff the company’s printing presses in Upper Merion Township, said Joseph Inemer, business manager for Teamsters Local 16-M. “We are talking amicably at this point. But there comes a point where no is no,” Inemer said.

Teamsters Local 1414, which represents mailers, who prepare papers for delivery, is still “way far apart” from company proposals, local president Bob Wilson said.

Meanwhile, Choochy Face and the gang have to show the banks that they’ve chopped out $20M in operating costs. Ruh-roh. Does this mean Early Word will have to go? Oh wait: It hasn’t been updated since 9/22. It’s already gone? Sheesh!
