This is an interesting little bit of what-have-you. In today’s morning papers ‚Äî all 312 of them ‚Äî it’s all over that PA Repulican Congressman Curt Weldon is under investigation by the FBI, just two weeks before he’s up for re-election. The source of the stink stems from allegations that Weldon used his pull to secure a heap of lobbying work for his daughter. (And we have to interject here: Even if the man is guilty, is he not, at the end of the day, simply guilty of hooking a sister up? I mean, c’mon.) Anyway, the stink would have cleared around here already if it wasn’t for something very strange indeed: Weldon has already outed his accusers, who up until now, have been hiding behind the grey cloud of “leak.” What’s more, the old coot has not made these revelations to the New York Times or even our own Inquirer. No, dawg, he dropped that science on none other than the University of Pennsylvania’s Daily Pennsylvanian. In a YouTube interview, Weldon claims that his alleged improprieties were leaked by one Melanie Sloan of an organization called CREW, which, to be fair, seems more pre-occupied with rubbing Foley in everyone’s nose than it does heralding to the world that a State Rep got his daughter a gig. He’s also got his eye on former NASA head Sandy Berger. Nevertheless, the whole flap doesn’t seem so much like an actual controversy as it does an object lesson in how shitty us Dems are at using Republican-style dirty tricks. And while the Dems desperately need to take back Congress, we’re also singing the same old song as everyone else: Before they do, for everyone’s sake, the Democrats also need to get their own A-game (and not the GOP’s) in some kind of fucking order.
