New NoLibs-Based Bank Hatches Robin Hood-esque Plan To Siphon Off Surburban Cash And, Um, Stay Funky

Hyperion (named after an old Greek sun god, and because no other U.S. bank currently has the name) also wants a landmark home, which they figure makes sense for a neighborhood where chain stores are still scarce. The founders want their bank, in a building owned by Philadelphia restaurateur, political activist and landlord Mercedes “Sedo” Sanchez, to symbolize the avenue’s reemergence from a worn commercial district into a thriving place that shows off what Matisoff calls the “funkiness” of Northern Liberties.
Not that Hyperion plans to restrict its activities to the immediate neighborhood. Like Royal Bank America, of Narberth, or Parke Bank, of Washington Township, Gloucester County, both of which have opened Center City offices in recent years, Hyperion is hiring experienced loan officers who will likely rely on deals in the suburbs, where most of the money is.
You know, what with “funk” being a quality most Main Line folks cherish most in their banks and all.
