This Week On The Philebrity Player: So This Is Goodbye By Junior Boys
How “electro” ever became the province of guys sporting the Jared Leto eyeliner-and-skater-cut look is kind of beyond us. Actually, it’s not ‚Äî we’re convinced that the Hot Topic youth nation are Bush’s young soldiers in disguise, aesthetic narcs killing every dream on the horizon ‚Äî but nevertheless, it’s been harder and harder to unearth new electronic music that is not an excercise in either fashion or, possibly worse, laptop egghead uselessness. Welcome, then, to Junior Boys. This Canadian duo are bleakly English in outlook ‚Äî many shades of Factory Records and the mid-80s Sheffield scene here ‚Äî and exquisitely tuneful in execution. More than once, we’ve spotted ghosts of Depeche Mode pass through here, and lo, it was good. But this is not a throwback move; Junior Boys merely carry an aesthetic line onward and upward. So This Is Goodbye is the group’s atmospheric and moody second album, and it finds them very much in the company of contemporary electro-soul outfits like Hot Chip and Saint Etienne. And let’s be frank: It’s only going to be called “electro-soul” right up until the moment that everyone cops to the truth ‚Äî after all, this is pop.
