This Week On The Philebrity Player: PLASTIC LITTLE!
How the fuck is it that it’s 2006 and Plastic Little are not absolutely huge? Since they started in 2000, they’ve gone from joke band to being among the most self-aware emcees in all of hip-hop right now, and, not for nothing, you can go through a whole list of people who might not have careers if not for following in their ironic-but-not-really- because-we-kid-because-we-love footsteps: Spank Rock, Yah Mos Def, VIP, and so on. This is not a dis; rather, it’s historical context. Plastic Little did not invent ironic, self-aware hip-hop ‚Äî they’re just the first people in a loooong time (if ever) to make it look so easy. And being the smartest people in the room hardly ever looks easy. Fast forward to now, and Plastic Little finally seem ready to get their due; next month sees the release of their long-in-coming second full-length, She’s Mature, on Tonearm. Here at Philebrity, we’re proud to offer you a sneak peak of what we’re thinking is going to be one of the year’s most talked-about indie hip-hop releases. She’s Mature finds the group in party mode once again, but it’s never as simple as that. Jayson Musson, Michael Stern, Kurt Hunte and Jon Thousand know that every party is fraught with peril and that the real joy comes in jumping from one scene to the next without owing shit to anybody. Yo Plastic Little: We relate.
