Readers Write: Much Ado About Club 218
Yesterday we dropped the news that longtime punk haunt Club 218 on South Street was most likely shutting down amidst vast canyons of non-knowledge about why that was. Interestingly, a whole bunch of readers weighed in. First there was this guy:
The club is closed because the owner of the building is fighting with the owners of the club. They were supposed to have a meeting last Friday to resolve everything, but that didn’t happen. Most likely over money. My prediction is the club re-opens but will shut down permanantly within the year. These inner-office spats usually spell doomsday for the business.
Then, a clarification from the inimitable Stacie George:
I gotta give credit where credit is due. Brian Labuda was the fine other half at making Disorder a wonderful success. Not just me! Of course, who doesn’t love the fame and attention in blog world but I gotta give some respect to my partner in crime.
Noted. And funny how the demise of Club 218 has done almost nothing but inspire nostalgia for the late, great Disorder. Meanwhile, here’s the scoop from another insider at 218:
Hey,
Lorenzo’s and Sons own the building. 218’s management had gotten along with the son, but not the dad. Now the son is out of the picture, and Lorenzo the dad is locking the door, thinking that if they hurt their bottom line enough, they can take over the 218 liquor license.I’d interview the lorenzo’s people and see what it is they want. If it’s another bar like before Down In Flames came around, it will be a tacky lounge like North, but trashier. Also, remind the Lorenzo’s people that 218 staff have families and bills coming up and locking the door is fucked.
218 has been supportive to other clubs on the street and have good relationships with them all. Don’t know what Lorenzo’s rep is other than providing pizza to tourists and drunks.
Interesting. But wait. Why would we interview these people? Or remind them of anything? Let’s all take a deep breath here, and remember the most important lesson of all: This is not CBGB’s. Clubs that nobody goes to and feature awful music all close for one reason or another anyway. YOU talk to them! This ain’t journalism, yo.
