Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann brought donuts and coffee to an American Legion post in South Philadelphia this morning for an informal chat about crime.

About 25 community members and organization leaders gathered in the doggedly Democratic home base of Gov. Rendell, whom Swann is trying to unseat in the fall.

Reporters were not permitted in the meeting, but afterward, Swann said the residents told him “that the problem isn’t a single thing, that there are many things that affect why there is crime in this community. It’s a lack of jobs, it’s a lack of hope, it’s poor education…

“The interesting thing is that not a single person mentioned - as a root cause for the violence and crime - a gun,” said Swann, who has opposed Philadelphia politicians’ calls for stricter gun laws.

Yeah, that is interesting, Lynn. Sorta like the way people wading in the ocean almost never mention how wet it is.
