Dept. Of Self-Help: How Rachel Inc. Learned To Stop Worrying
Do you ever go through that thing where you get so stressed out that people can’t even talk to you, and you’ve been in permanent freakout mode for so long that you start to wonder, Is this actually my personality now?
Rachel Furman ‚Äî the brains behind Rachel Inc. ‚Äî did at the end of last year. So she sewed up all of her business contacts, got rid of a bunch of crap, got out of her lease, bought an Airstream Trailer, and said, “Fuck it,” straight across America. And in this week’s PW cover story, she reveals what she learned:
It wasn’t Philly that needed to change-it was me. Philly doesn’t change. Philly is the same now as it was when I was miserable before I left for my trip. It’s the same as when I was having the time of my life. It’s the same as when I first moved into the city, wide-eyed in awe and eager to have it all. What had changed was my mindset.
Just like how everyone catches the same damn cold that rips through the city like the plague, at some point everyone seems to catch the same damn rut that makes them sick to death of this town. So sick of it that they don’t feel like going out anymore, and nothing is fun and the people suck and the parties aren’t worth the effort.
Philly doesn’t change. You’re just sick of yourself.
Food for thought, people. Food for thought.
